The Agilent black ceramic bead assembly (part number 5183-2007) is a replacement ceramic source (bead) for the Nitrogen‑Phosphorus Detector (NPD). In the NPD, column effluent is passed through a hydrogen–air plasma on the surface of a heated ceramic source (the bead); alkali ions coated on the bead surface uniquely facilitate ionization of nitrogen‑ and/or phosphorus‑containing organic compounds. The bead is listed by Agilent as one of the three NPD bead types (white ceramic, black ceramic 5183‑2007, and Blos bead) and is used when replacing or servicing the detector bead per Agilent service instructions.

Key Features:

  • Manufacturer part number: 5183-2007 (black ceramic bead)
  • Identified by Agilent as one of three NPD bead types (white ceramic, black ceramic 5183-2007, Blos bead)
  • Initial bead voltage range for ceramic beads: 0.0 to 2.0 V (set before ignition)
  • Typical ignition voltage for a new ceramic bead: 2.8 to 3.2 V
  • Acceptable NPD leakage current after installation: stable and < 2.0 pA (per Agilent procedure)

Advantages:

  • Provides the heated ceramic source surface required for NPD operation as described by Agilent
  • Enables the alkali‑ion coated bead mechanism that selectively facilitates ionization of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds
  • Supports reproducible ignition and operating setpoints documented by Agilent (specified initial voltage and typical ignition voltage), aiding proper detector setup
